Fair Folks: What brought you to New York?
Alison: A search for exposure to limitless creativity! I moved up here just after turning 25, in search of professional inspiration and to shake things up after some challenges in my personal life. The risk of trying something new and different has rewarded me on a daily basis in ways unimaginable 5 years ago.
We're at a really interesting global moment of urban change, especially for the relationship of cities and their water: demands for resiliency measures, infrastructure, active waterfronts, land use needs, and social equity. I am proud to participate in implementing projects around our city that foster many types of resiliency, and keep New York at the forefront internationally.
FF: First New York City block?
A: 6th Street between A and B in Manhattan.
FF: Favorite neighborhood?
A: Red Hook is quite compelling with repurposed warehouses and views of port activity, and its (relatively) remote geography fosters a tight community. I look for any excuse to visit with friends there. I also love Manhattan's Chinatown for its constant activity, and the gorgeous buildings of Brooklyn Heights.
FF: If not New York...?
A: New Orleans is very much my home, even after 5 years away.
FF: Subway, Citibike, Taxi, Uber?
A: My preference is always walking, for maximum exposure to beautiful buildings and street ephemera. I take a public transit daily, usually subway or bus - as a friend once told me, real New Yorkers take the bus!
FF: One secret place/event in NYC that nobody else knows about?
A: The activity at all hours in Sunset Park. I love the soccer games, groups ballroom dancing or doing exercise, old man yelling club, dog run, and kids everywhere, against the backdrop of the skyline.
FF: Last concert?
A: Hall and Oates in Bethel Woods.
FF: Most recent read?
A: 'All My Single Ladies,' by Rebecca Traister.
FF: What ice cream flavor would you be and why?
A: Neapolitan- variety is the spice of life--and on a cone to keep people on their toes.
FF: The ubiquitous egg and cheese sandwich - add sausage or avocado?
A: I prefer a breakfast burrito over a sandwich, and yes please add avocado and hot sauce.
