Cosme Herrera

Biography

Formally trained as a painter and presently working primarily in drawing, Herrera also engages in site-specific installation projects and sculpture. In describing his work, he has written: “I am very interested in the landscape. New technologies and contemporary materials have broadened our ideas of utility for our lands, virtually and physically, blending artifice with nature to create a neovista.” He has had numerous exhibitions in New York and Florida and has been widely published and awarded residencies at the Cooper Union, Vermont Studio Center, the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Jamaica Center for the Arts & Learning. Herrera attended the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL, where he received his BFA in 3D arts in 2003 and later Pratt Institute of Art, where he received his MFA in painting and drawing in 2007. He resides and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Artist Statement

Through my work, I aim to create a universal language. Using a system of logos, signs and symbols, I produce a lexicon of imagery and objects that manifest in my art through the use of metaphors and parables. Utilizing various natural and synthetic materials, I create and investigate my own personal and ritualistic relationship with these resources through my process. The allegorical content I offer unfolds in a symbiotic world where characters and objects coexist in peace or chaos with their respective environments. My narrative explores life and death through the various relationships the characters and objects share ecologically, industrially, and spiritually
